ABSTRACT
For some students, thesis is still a serious problem. This is indicated by they can complete lectures as much as about 140 credits in 8 semesters, but for the thesis that 6 credits have been taken in 4 semesters. Another problem is the use of a qualitative approach that is still little used because of various kinds of fear. The purpose of this study is to uncover how many students are using a qualitative approach compared to those using quantitative and looking for the reasons why they are reluctant to use qualitative approach in making thesis. The data collection was done by looking at the existing documents at the Bureau of Psychology Program of Diponegoro University especially the year of 2006, the interview with the supervisors and students who are working on thesis and FGD with the students taking the subjects of Qualitative Research and Thesis Writing Technique. The collected data were analyzed inductively then narrative descriptions were made. The results showed that the number of students of Psychology Study Program of Diponegoro University using a qualitative approach in doing the thesis amounted to 10 people compared to 91 using a quantitative approach. About the duration of doing research or thesis, not all who use the qualitative approach must be longer than the quantitative approach. While the average number of pages using a qualitative approach, the report or the script is thicker than that using a quantitative approach. The reasons that came up especially on students who are reluctant to use a qualitative approach is due to feel less mastering the method, fear in collecting data (participatory observation), and worried the time is long. Students prefer the quantitative approach because it uses no problem statistics (high school IPA), there is preparation course Psychology Scale Making and want to quickly finish (pass). The conclusion of this research is still very few students who use qualitative approach in doing thesis in Psychology Study Program of Diponegoro University, compared with using quantitative approach with reason to feel less master specially in data collecting and afraid to finish.
